Our family felt completely at ease while traveling through Colombia. We were able to wander through markets, take boat rides, and explore beautiful towns without worry. From the bustling streets of Medellín to the peaceful waters of Guatapé, every stop offers something special. Visiting Colombia means immersing yourself in a country filled with life and joy. And yes, El Peñón is one of its brightest gems!
What is El Penon?
El Peñón de Guatapé, often simply called El Peñón, is a towering granite rock standing over 200 meters tall. This giant monolith is believed to be around 65 million years old, formed by ancient geological forces that shaped the region. It is an awe-inspiring sight, rising dramatically from the surrounding green hills and sparkling reservoir below.
The rock holds a special place in local history and culture. A friendly rivalry once existed between the neighboring towns of Guatapé and El Penon over who could claim it. In the mid-20th century, residents of Guatapé began painting their town’s name on the rock. They started with a large “G” and half of a “U” before people from El Penon stopped the effort. Today, those giant letters remain on the rock’s face as a quirky reminder of this spirited competition!
Visitors will notice the winding staircase zigzagging up the side of the rock, cleverly built into a crack. This staircase, with its more than 700 steps, leads adventurers to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Colombia. From the top, you can see the beautiful patchwork of islands and water that make up the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir. It is no wonder that El Penon is one of the most photographed sites in the country.
Visiting El Peñón
El Penon is located just outside the town of Guatapé, about a two-hour drive from Medellín. If you are already staying in Guatapé, it is only a short tuk-tuk ride or even a pleasant walk from the center. From Medellín, you can take a guided day trip, a public bus, or rent a car for the journey.
Tickets to climb the rock are sold at the base and are very affordable. Your ticket covers access to the staircase and the viewing platforms at the top. The climb can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace, but you will want to plan extra time to enjoy the view once you reach the summit.
We recommend setting aside at least two hours for your visit. This gives you time to take photos at the base, climb at a comfortable pace, and relax at the top. There are also shops and snack stands nearby, so you can grab a refreshing drink before or after your climb. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon can be more comfortable, as midday sun can make the climb warmer.
Activities at El Penon
The highlight of visiting El Penon is, of course, the climb! The staircase winds its way up the rock in a fascinating zigzag pattern. While 740 steps may sound daunting, there are several resting spots along the way. Our girls loved counting the steps and cheering us on as we climbed higher!
Once at the top, you are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir. The shimmering turquoise water winds around small islands and peninsulas, creating a scene that looks like it belongs on a postcard. There are also small shops at the top selling souvenirs and refreshments, so you can celebrate your accomplishment with a cold drink while soaking in the view.
Back at the base, you can explore the surrounding area. Vendors sell local snacks, fresh fruit juice, and handmade crafts. For those who want even more adventure, nearby activities include boat tours on the reservoir and zip-lining over the water. There is also a viewing platform at the base where you can take incredible photos of the rock itself.
Nearby Attractions
After visiting El Penon, there are plenty of nearby attractions to explore! The charming town of Guatapé is just minutes away and is famous for its colorful zócalos. These decorative panels at the bottom of every building tell stories about the town’s culture and history. Strolling through its streets feels like stepping into a living painting.
You can also take a boat tour of the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir. These tours offer a unique perspective of the area and often include stops at small islands or viewpoints. Some tours even pass by the ruins of the old town of El Peñol, which was flooded to create the reservoir.
For those who love hiking, there are scenic trails in the surrounding countryside. Nature lovers will enjoy spotting birds and taking in the fresh mountain air. Cafes and restaurants in Guatapé provide a great place to relax after your adventures, with many offering balconies overlooking the water.
Visiting El Penon and Guatapé in one day is very manageable, but staying overnight allows you to enjoy the area at a slower pace. Watching the sunset over the reservoir is an unforgettable experience!

The Family Verdict
Our adventure travel family absolutely loved visiting El Penon! Buttercup was determined to race to the top, while Spider Monkey stopped to point out every view along the way. The climb was challenging but completely doable, and the sense of accomplishment at the top was incredible!
We spent time taking in the sweeping views and snapping dozens of family photos. The weather was perfect, and the cool breeze at the summit was refreshing after the climb. On the way down, we rewarded ourselves with fresh mango slices from a vendor at the base.
