Adventure is in Our Souls

We dedicated our fourth day in O'ahu to exploring the breathtaking Kualoa Ranch, nestled on the vibrant eastern coast of the island. Spanning an impressive 4,000 acres, this private nature reserve is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a thriving working cattle ranch, home to over 600 head of cattle, 120 horses, and 200 sheep. From the towering mountain cliffs to the shimmering waters of Kaneohe Bay, Kualoa Ranch is a paradise renowned for its stunning landscapes and epic movie backdrops.

Our Epic Family Adventures at Kualoa Ranch

Adventure is in Our Souls

I pre-booked our activities with transfers to and from the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the Kualoa Ranch website. There was a ton of activities to select from. I was looking to try something a little different than we had done this year, while trying something that kept us actively involved (rather than a tram-like tour where we hopped on and off to view the sites. So I selected the UTV Raptor tour.

What exactly is a UTV? Imagine an ATV, but designed for 2-6 adventurers to share the thrill together! This setup allowed us to chat, snap photos, and soak in the adventure as one cohesive crew. At Kualoa Ranch, you have two exciting options for the 2-hour UTV tour - A narrated tour, where your group rides with a knowledgeable tour guide who shares fascinating insights about the terrain, or a non-narrated tour, where you take the wheel yourself, but follow a guide in the first vehicle of your group. We opted for the non-narrated tour, and even without a guide, we discovered a wealth of knowledge during our stops.

Our adventure kicked off with an smooth early morning transfer. Kualoa Ranch provides convenient transportation from Waikiki to their property for select tours, available for an additional per person fee. We gathered at the Grand Islander Bus Depot, the bustling hub for most bus pick-ups at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Climbing aboard a comfortable bus, we settled in for an hour-long ride filled with beautiful views. Upon our arrival at Kualoa Ranch, we were ushered onto the front porch of a large building.

As the last of the tables filled up, a somewhat hard-to-hear welcome speech broke through the chatter. With a wave of the hand, we were directed towards the adventure that awaited us! We navigated our way to the back of the main building, where ant signs beckoned us to our respective tour starting points. The atmosphere was charged with energy as we spotted the line for our UTV tour. At first, the maze of people and activities felt a bit overwhelming, but we quickly adapted, deciphering the clues of our surroundings. Before we knew it, we were ready to embark on an exhilarating journey. The adventure was just beginning!

After donning our safety gear, we received an crash course on how to navigate the UTVs. Once we were loaded into our rugged vehicle, we set off on a 2-hour UTV tour that whisked us through expansive green valleys and up breathtaking mountainous paths. The ranch's terrain is a mesmerizing tapestry of nature's wonders, featuring dense Hawaiian rainforest bursting with vibrant life, expansive open valleys that invite adventure, and steep mountain cliffs that soar majestically into the sky. As we journeyed along the paved path, it suddenly transformed into a rugged dirt trail, enveloping us in a fine layer of dust that danced in the air like tiny sparkles. The breathtaking mountainous landscape unfolded before us, revealing stunning, jagged peaks draped in a lush blanket of greenery, creating a scene that felt like a page out of a fantastical adventure tale. The air was electric with the promise of exploration and the thrill of the wild!

As we ventured further into the mountains, we discovered iconic film locations and narrowly escaped our encounter with the lingering Jurassic residents.

Kualoa Ranch, often referred to as Hollywood's "Hawaii's Backlot," has appeared in numerous films shot at the ranch over the past 60 years, reaching an audience of over a billion people. And it is easy to see why -- the views were nothing short of spectacular! We explored filming locations from blockbuster hits like Jurassic Park and 50 First Dates. Kualoa Ranch has been the backdrop for over 70 Hollywood movies since the 1950s, including epic films such as Jumanji, Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World, and Pearl Harbor. Not to mention, iconic TV shows like Hawaii Five-O, Magnum P.I., and LOST have all showcased the breathtaking landscapes of Kualoa. Our UTV tour may not have stopped at every filming location, but we had stops at three iconic Jurassic Park locations that left us breathless. As we roared through the lush landscapes, we also cruised by numerous other legendary sites, each one giving us a tantalizing glimpse into a piece of cinematic history!

As our exhilarating 2-hour tour came to a thrilling close, we made our way back to the starting point, where we turned in our safety equipment. But the excitement didn't end there! With over an hour to spare before our return transport, we were eager to dive into the some retail therapy at the gift shop and farmers market.

Adventure is in Our Souls

Amidst the colorful fruits and vegetables, I was tipped off about the must-try delicacies: the legendary apple bananas and the delightful ice cream bananas! These unique varieties promised a twist on one of our all-time favorite fruits, and we couldn't resist the temptation. Although the names at the market were a bit different, we decided to embrace the adventure and take the plunge! And oh, what a decision that was! With each bite, we were transported to a flavor paradise—sweet, creamy, and utterly delicious! Even our notoriously picky Spider Monkey, who usually turns her nose up at anything new, gave her enthusiastic stamp of approval! It was a delightful moment of shared joy as we savored these extraordinary treats, making our day even more memorable. What a fantastic way to wrap up our adventure—filled with laughter, exploration, and the sweet taste of discovery!

The gift shop area buzzed with energy, featuring a quaint "quick service" style restaurant that promised delicious bites. However, the excitement was dampened by a long line that seemed to stretch into eternity, compounded by an even longer wait for food that tested everyone's patience. The girls, fueled by curiosity and a love for animals, decided to abandon the line and head over to pet the horses. Before long, the bus arrived to whisk us away, transporting us back to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, where more adventures awaited us!

The Family Verdict

While the exhilarating ride through such diverse landscapes was a rush, the girls were irresistibly drawn to the horses. If I could turn back time, I would probably choose to embark on the horseback riding tour instead. I believe it would have engaged the girls even more. Although Dustin and I found the movie sites fascinating, the girls were less enthusiastic about them, longing instead for the thrill of riding through the lush terrain on horseback. All things considered, our experience at Kualoa Ranch was nothing short of exhilarating, and I can’t wait to dive back into the heart of its breathtaking landscapes! The lush greenery, stunning vistas, and thrilling activities make it a paradise for adventure seekers. Next time, instead of just soaking in the sights while Dustin experienced the adventure of driving the UTV, I would choose an experience that truly engages the girls' senses and adrenaline.
